Things to Do in Puerto Morelos: Cenotes, Reef Snorkeling and Day Trips

Puerto Morelos is small, but the list of things to do around it is not. Between a protected coral reef, a jungle full of cenotes and a sleepy town square, this stretch of the Riviera Maya rewards travelers who slow down. Here is how to fill your days.

Snorkel or dive the Puerto Morelos reef

The town sits in front of the Puerto Morelos National Reef Park, part of the world's second-largest coral reef. It is just a few minutes offshore, so even a short boat trip drops you over healthy coral and turtles. Local cooperatives run small-group snorkeling and diving tours straight from the town dock.

Swim the cenotes

Just outside town, the Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenote Route) leads into the jungle to a string of freshwater sinkholes — open pools, caverns and zip-lines. They are cooler and quieter than the famous cenotes further south, and only 10–20 minutes from the coast.

Explore the town

Puerto Morelos rewards wandering: the main square and its leaning lighthouse, fresh ceviche at the fish market, the Jardín Botánico Yaax Che botanical garden, and Sunday markets. Mornings are for the beach; evenings for tacos and a Caribbean sunset.
